Joanna


Dr Joanna Bennett (PhD, BSc (Hons), RM, RN) is a senior research Fellow at the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health. She is currently leading research on race equality training in collaboration with the National Institute for Mental Health England/CSIP.

 

Dr Bennett is also a Visiting Professor in the School of Health and Social Sciences at Middlesex University.

 

Dr Bennett’s professional background is as a nurse and midwife. She has been involved in mental health education, training and research for over 15 years. She has taught across a wide range of mental health courses but her particular areas of expertise are in medication management, particularly the detection and management of side effects, user and carer involvement and race equality.

 

Dr Bennett is the author of several articles published in peer reviewed journals and mental health magazines. She has been a member of various national advisory and stakeholder committees/groups including: The National Mental Health Taskforce, the review of mental health nursing and the BME National Steering Group.

 

Choice in mental health is important to her as it can break down barriers between healthcare professionals, service users and carers and recognises that each has a valid role to play in developing more appropriate and effective mental health treatment and care.
