Making choices

As a carer, you have to make choices every day, either for yourself or to help the person in your care. Sometimes you may know the right choice, while sometimes you may have to consider the situation in detail before you make your choice.

Although it’s a very simple thing to do, it can be helpful to think about the good and not-so-good things about the choices you have to make.

Exercise 2: How to choose the right treatment

Once you have access to all the information about a particular treatment (what it is, how it works, what symptoms it will help, what are the side effects, etc) it can be helpful to think about how that information will affect you and the person in your care.

Complete the following table and discuss it with the person in your care and their healthcare professional. It will help you to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of a particular medication or treatment, and to make a decision together.
