Case Study 7 : Rachel

(from a service user's perspective)

Synopsis

Rachel became unwell in 1994, experiencing voices, command hallucinations and delusions, which resulted in her being sectioned and hospitalised. Her introduction to Hafal, a Welsh mental health charity, gave her a new outlook on her situation and the possibilities of recovery. By participating in a programme where she developed her own recovery plan, she became more proactive and purposeful, and is now employed as a Practice Leader at a Hafal housing project.

Key choice message

Rachel's recovery began with involvement in her own recovery plan and setting her own short-term and long-term goals. She sought support from a local mental health charity and through them chose an active programme of work and development that helped her find a new direction.
