Case Study 3 : Colin
(from a HCP's perspective)
Synopsis
Colin (42) is diagnosed with schizophrenia, and had suffered night-time hypersalivation as a distressing side effect of his medication for six years. After consultation with Colin and his wife, whose sleep was also affected, his HCP undertook research to examine the choices available to stop the hypersalivation, and presented this to them. In collaboration with his psychiatrist, Colin continues to take his medication alongside treatment to stop the hypersalivation. Both Colin and his wife are more satisfied with their treatment and feel more involved in care decisions.
Key choice message
Collaboration by the service user, carer and HCP resulted in a new, successful choice of medication to stop hypersalivation, a side effect of treatment for schizophrenia.
