Case Study 1 : Jane

Synopsis

Jane (26) developed mental health problems after the birth of her first child. She had a history of recreational drug use, but hid this from staff when she was admitted to hospital after developing a drug-induced psychosis. Jane was greatly concerned that anti-psychotic medication would affect her ability to look after her young baby, which was very important to her.

After assessment, she received assurance that she would not be forced to take medication and was offered a range of psychosocial interventions. She voluntarily chose to discontinue medication while her baby was very young.

Key choice message

Jane was given the choice not to take medication, because of her concern about side effects on a very important aspect of her life.

If Jane had not been well supported in this choice, she would have made the decision to move to a new area and become lost to all health professionals. This was a considered decision in Jane’s particular circumstances. It may well not apply in many cases.
