Accessing information
Providing access to information is a central goal of the Government's agenda to improve choice in the National Health Service. In this context, there are two types of information:
- General information, which is available to everyone.
- Personalised information, which is specific and tailored to the individual. This needs to consider culture, ethnicity, religion, language, gender, age, disability, literacy and socio-economic status.
Information is vital for improving relationships between service users and healthcare professionals (HCPs). It is essential for the process of enabling choice.
Whether you are a service user, carer or HCP, the good news is that there is a large amount of general information which can be easily accessed on the Internet. Many other choices are available, but care should be taken when searching on the Internet to ensure that sites found are suitable. Each of the below choices provides a range of information and website links. These are not intended to be comprehensive or exclusive and should not take the place of talking to your HCP. Service users should discuss their links with their carer and/or HCP before undertaking any activities.
